UCL: Ancelotti breaks Alex Ferguson’s record, Guardiola equals Mourinho’s after 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti has set a new record by becoming the first manager to reach five Champions League finals.

On the other hand, Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola also equalled Jose Mourinho’s unwanted record.

It looked to be all settled for Manchester City and their place confirmed in the final after Riyad Mahrez netted a brilliant goal in the 73rd minute of Wednesday night’s semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu.

Mahrez’s goal meant that the Premier League leaders were winning 5-3 on aggregate.

But substitute, Rodrygo scored a dramatic double to send the match to extra-time.

And just after the restart, veteran striker, Karim Benzema won a penalty and slotted it into the bottom corner for Real Madrid to secure a 6-5 aggregate victory for the LaLiga winners.

The Spanish club will now clash with Liverpool in the final in Paris later this month.

The result means Ancelotti has become the first manager with the most Champions League final appearances.

Before, the veteran boss, who will be retiring after his current contract expires, had previously been tied on four, alongside Manchester United legend, Sir Ferguson, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and compatriot, Marcello Lippi.

And in contrast, Man City’s Guardiola has joined old rival, Mourinho with the unwanted record of having suffered the most semi-final eliminations in the Champions League.

Guardiola was eliminated from the competition at the semi-finals with Barcelona in 2010 and 2012. He suffered three losses while in charge of Bayern Munich in three successive seasons between 2014 and 2016.

And last night’s defeat to Real Madrid was Guardiola’s sixth semi-final defeat.
